HELLO PAUL KNIGHT, WELCOME TO ABOUT INSIDER! CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN FILM?
I kind of stumbled into filmmaking in my early 40s. I had no initial interest in creating films; I simply enjoyed watching them. My foray into the industry began with extra work on ‘Judge Dredd’ and ‘The Fifth Element’ in the ’90s, primarily through my experience in security. Beyond that, film didn’t excite me as much; I was truly passionate about writing.
Around the time my first novel was released, I frequently crossed paths with another author who shared a similar background. As we participated in book talks, he consistently shared his experiences trying to turn his book into a film. After years of this, I couldn’t help but ask about his film again at the launch of his second book. That was the last sob story I could take. I left the event inspired and motivated.
That weekend, I wrote my first screenplay. By Monday, I was scouting for a director and crew, gathering friends to act (in the loosest sense), and pulling in favours for locations. I funded everything with whatever money I had that day. In just five weeks, we were shooting the film.
I made every mistake possible and learned about people’s capabilities, regardless of their formal training. Eighteen days later, I had the film completed. It was an incredible journey filled with challenges, but it was also enriching. I did it to prove a point: instead of waiting for years, get up and act.
The final product may not have been polished, but I became hooked on the process. I immersed myself in every aspect of filmmaking, from producing to editing. I understood every step of the production process, which empowered me.
It snowballed from there; 15 years later, I’m still here, still learning, still making film. I look forward to enjoying the next 15 years, and God willing, 15 more after that.
In an inspiring twist, that other author, Jason Cook, finally got his film made nearly 20 years later, and it’s set to release in spring 2025. I’m incredibly proud of him for staying dedicated to his dream. I encourage all filmmakers to watch ‘Cookster: Darkest Days’. It’s a remarkable film, but the journey behind it is even more inspiring.
YOUR CAREER JOURNEY HAS BEEN REMARKABLE. WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED AS A DIRECTOR, AND HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME THEM?
As a film director, the journey is filled with significant challenges, such as managing creative differences, adhering to budget constraints, and balancing artistic vision with commercial demands. Tight schedules and unexpected technical issues test my problem-solving abilities. Through these experiences, I have discovered the importance of detailed planning, open communication, and flexibility.
Building a strong and motivated team is essential, and I strive to foster collaboration and respect on set. Post-production can bring its own set of hurdles, but remaining engaged and clear about the vision keeps us aligned. Criticism and burnout are integral parts of this journey, seen not as setbacks but as opportunities for growth and renewal. Ultimately, filmmaking is about embracing challenges while passionately telling the story that matters most.
Finding the next directing gig can also be a formidable challenge. Unlike acting or working as a Director of Photography, continuous directing opportunities are rare, especially in the UK. To all aspiring directors out there, I encourage you to use your downtime between jobs to invest in your growth. Take acting classes to understand your cast’s methods and approaches. Explore camera angles and new technologies, and appreciate the art of sound design. Remember, a film is crafted three times: first by the writer, then by the director, and finally by the editor. Stay flexible and embrace learning, for while directing opportunities may be limited, your dedication will pave the way for future success.
WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE WHEN DEVELOPING A FILM?
When starting to develop your feature film, it’s crucial to embrace the business side of ‘show business.’ This understanding is vital if you want to create multiple films throughout your career. Many new filmmakers chase their passion projects—often artsy dramas with little commercial appeal—only to wonder why they fail. No matter the concept, funding is necessary; there are costs at every turn.
Begin your journey by focusing on what will generate more revenue than it costs. Aim for commercial genre films with relatable themes, broad appeal, and an element of escapism. This mindset helps attract investors who recognise the potential for returns and distributors eager to promote your work.
Craft your story with the budget in mind. This approach is my guiding principle, especially in a country with limited film resources. Focus on the core theme and emotional journey at the heart of your narrative. Build an immersive world with characters that resonate, piecing together your jigsaw puzzle from the edges to the centre. Maximising both budget and creativity from the start is essential.
Collaboration is key; remember that there is no ‘I’ in ‘team.’ Engage in meaningful discussions with cinematographers, production designers, and costume designers to ensure the aesthetic beautifully supports the narrative flow.
During production, create an atmosphere that encourages experimentation and the sharing of ideas. While maintaining a clear vision, embrace the magic of collaboration. Some of the most unforgettable moments emerge from improvisation and unexpected ideas on set.
Ultimately, balance is the heart of the process—stay organised and intentional while nurturing creativity and serendipity. Show business isn’t just about the business; the ‘show’ aspect is equally vital. This approach may not suit everyone, but it has propelled me forward and enabled me to work with higher budgets.
YOUR FILMS OFTEN TOUCH ON THEMES OF RESILIENCE AND THE HUMAN SPIRIT. WHERE DO YOU DRAW THESE INSPIRATIONS FROM?
Life. As a writer, you’re encouraged to “write what you know,” and this applies to storytelling in film as well. When you embed a part of yourself in each movie, you create a connection that resonates with others who have faced similar struggles.
Growing up on a council estate in the East End, I fought—both figuratively and literally most of my young life. I ran with a tough crowd and encountered plenty of challenges. It wasn’t until my 30s that I began to turn my life around. While I may never write or make a rom-com, I have countless stories about struggle, loss, violence, and crime.
No matter our circumstances, we all experience these themes in some way. They permeate our reality, often seen in the news. In telling these stories, I strive to add a touch of charm and tongue-in-cheek humour because it doesn’t all have to be doom and gloom. Even the bad guys can find a win.

They need to get ready for an exciting adventure with ‘Fyre Rises’! This movie is set to take them on an intense ride filled with action and a heartfelt story. At its core, it’s all about redemption and the impact of our choices as we follow Fyre, a character who’s determined to stay true to his convictions while doing the right thing under threatening circumstances.

Visually, ‘Fyre Rises’ is simply stunning! It blends modern film techniques with a gritty, realistic backdrop. The movie perfectly balances pulse-pounding suspense with touching moments, where emotions hit just as hard as the explosive action scenes.
If you love action-packed stories, you’re in for a treat, and if you enjoy deep, meaningful storytelling, you’ll be captivated by the layered plot. This film makes you think about what lines you would cross and when. So, get ready for a memorable experience that you’ll be thinking about long after the credits roll!
WHEN AND WHERE WILL AUDIENCES BE ABLE TO WATCH FYRE RISES?
Fyre had a brief theatrical run earlier this year in the UK and will be available to audiences worldwide on DVD and major VOD platforms from December 23rd.
WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF MAKING FYRE RISES, AND HOW DID YOU NAVIGATE IT?
It feels like a lifetime ago, but most of the film was shot during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time that closed many avenues for us. Making an independent film on a small budget is always a challenge, yet we found strength in the adversity. The pandemic added limitations that forced us to adapt and innovate, turning chaos into creativity each day.
We embraced the situation, using it as an opportunity to think outside the box. With face masks becoming essential, we inspired our different gangs to reflect this theme, allowing us to incorporate a dynamic array of face coverings that enhanced the scenes’ aesthetic.
Filming during this time was an unusual journey. Some storyline elements faced delays due to international travel restrictions, reminding us of the importance of adaptability. This experience opened doors we didn’t expect, leading us to locations and actors that may have otherwise been out of reach. Ultimately, the journey proved to be filled with more triumphs than setbacks.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE AUDIENCES WILL TAKE AWAY FROM FYRE RISES?
I hope that when audiences watch Fyre Rises, they walk away feeling excited by the action and touched by the story! At its heart, the film shines a light on how not taking action can be just as tough as making the wrong choice. It’s a bit like that ‘Sliding Doors’ moment for action lovers—making you think about what might have changed if you’d taken a different path.
The film digs into what it means to stick to your beliefs, even when it feels like everything is stacked against you. Beyond the thrilling moments, I want viewers to connect with Fyre’s journey, seeing their own struggles and victories reflected in his story. It’s a reminder that even in our toughest times, there’s always a flicker of hope that can guide us along the way.
In the end, I hope Fyre Rises resonates with everyone emotionally and physically, leaving them feeling inspired, entertained, and thinking about the choices we make and the legacies we create.
LOOKING BACK AT YOUR CAREER, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT AS A DIRECTOR?
Anyone familiar with my well-documented journey in filmmaking knows it has not been the easiest path. Yet, staying in the industry is a personal achievement that I take pride in. There have been many moments when walking away would have been simpler, but I find joy in offering advice and mentoring emerging talent. By highlighting the industry’s pitfalls and sharing ways to avoid them, I continue to grow—becoming a little older, a lot wiser, and forever learning.
In terms of the work, my proudest moments are not defined by awards or accolades but by the knowledge that we have created something that resonates emotionally. It’s incredibly rewarding when our work lingers with audiences long after the credits roll, sparking meaningful conversations. That connection makes all the effort truly worthwhile.
FINALLY, WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? ARE THERE ANY EXCITING PROJECTS ON THE HORIZON?
As my former instructor Dov Simens always says, “Always have several projects in various stages of development underway.” I’m excited to share that I have a fantastic lineup of titles coming out over the next couple of years! Kicking things off in 2025 is ‘Manhattan Heist,’ a thrilling crime story set in the vibrant city of New York. Following that, I’m thrilled to dive into ‘Klaws,’ a creature feature that I’ve been developing, which is set in the beautiful national forest of Big Bear, California. And I can’t wait to bring the sequel to ‘Fyre Rises’ into production; it’s called ‘Catch Fyre,’ and I’m aiming to have it ready by 2026.
On top of that, I’m producing a few exciting projects for other filmmakers, and later next year, I’ll also be guest lecturing about navigating the industry. There’s so much on the horizon, and I can’t wait to share it all with you!
